Magento 1.1 Released

We’re happy to see the evolution of one of the most promising open source PHP ecommerce packages on the market, Magento. They just released version 1.1 which includes:

  • Bundles (most commonly used in kitting or in the built-to-order product model)
  • Virtual Products - products that don’t require shipping information
  • Custom Product Options - allow merchants to designate a SKU to a base item and add attributes instead of having to create a unique SKU for every combination of options (simple products).
  • Personalized Products - a new product configuration feature in Magento 1.1 that allows customers to personalize products by adding text, such as embroideries, engravings, etc.
  • API - a new Webservices API
  • Peformance Increase - as much as 40% in the catalog and sales modules

For instruction for upgrading and more information click over to the Magento blog.

The Official Launch of CartCraze.com

It’s been a long time coming and now we’ve finally got Cart Craze up and running. This has been an internal  database of websites that we maintained by hand for a few years, so it is exciting to share it with the design community. Thank you to all of the initial supporters who have been sending us some great ecommerce sites to add.

A quick background - Cart Craze was developed out of necessity because as web designers we needed a place to research the current trends in ecommerce design and to see if there were any new tricks or functionality that would enhance the shopping experience.

In development stage of Cart Craze we borrowed from a successful preexisting concept model known as CSS Mania, which is personally a site that I visit every day for design inspiration and I that I love to death.  From our point of view, Cart Craze serves a similar type of content but to a very different and focused audience.  Out of design respect Cart Craze, is paying homage to CSS Mania - not intending to step on any toes (please don’t send hate mail).

Down the road we anticipate adding more tips and resources in regard to best practices in ecommerce design and programming as well as product reviews for things like shopping cart software, payment services, and customer service services to name a few.

We hope you enjoy the ecommerce design gallery and that it inspires you, and by all means if you find a great ecommerce site, please submit it.
